Mood VS Affect
Mood is sustained emotion
Affect is moment-moment experience
Unipolar VS Bipolar VS Normal
Normal is a range between Dysthymia and Hypomania
Bipolar is a range between Depression and Mania
Unipolar is a range between Depression and Dysthymia
Total range: Depression -> Dysthymia -> Euthymia -> Hypomania -> Mania

Sadness VS Clinically Significant Depression
Quality - Greater intensity
Associated Features - Somatic and Cognitive accompanying features
Absence of Precipitants - Mood may develop without a “trigger”
Major Depressive Episode
5+ of following symptoms for 2+ weeks:
- Depressed mood
- Anhedonia
- Appetite Change
- Sleep Change
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation (movement up or down)
- Fatigue
- Worthlessness
- Decreased concentration
- Suicidal thoughts
MDE Specifiers
Anxious distress, Melancholic features, Atypical, Psychotic features, Catatonic features, Peripartum onset, Seasonal Pattern, Mixed features (8)
Major Depressive Disorder Diagnostic Criteria
- Major Depressive Episode
- Not otherwise explained
- No history of manic or hypomanic episodes (suggests bipolar)
MDD Epidemeology
Genetic, Females, 25 yr old median onset
Suicide Risk Factors
Family History, Early Life Adversity, Mental Health Disorder, Impulsivity, Substance Misuse, Hopelessness (6)
Suicide Risk (Turecki and Brent)
Individual Factors - Predisposing, Mediating, Precipitating - affected by lack of social cohesion. Environmental factors impact precipitating as well and precipitating leads to suicide.
