Motion Flashcards
(22 cards)
Important part of describing the motion of an object is to describe how far it has moved.
Distance
The distance and direction of an object’s change in position from the starting point.
Displacement
Is the distance an object travels per unit of time.
Speed
Total of distance traveled divided by total time of travel.
Average Speed
The speed at a given point in time
Instantaneous Speed
The speed of an object and the direction of its motion.
Velocity
Rate of change of velocity.
Accelerator
Is a push or pull.
Force
When two or more forces act on an object at the same time, the forces combined.
Net Force
Forces on an object.
Balanced Force
The tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion.
Inertia
F=MA
Newton’s second Law of Motion
The force that opposes the sliding motion of two surfaces that are touching each other.
Friction
The frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other.
Static Friction
The force that opposes the motion of two surfaces sliding past each other.
Sliding Friction
Opposes the motion of objects that move thought the air.
Air Resistance
An attractive force between any two objects that depends on the masses of the object and the distance between them.
Gravity
Gravitational force exerted on an object.
Weight
Acceleration toward the center of a curved or circular path.
Centripetal Acceleration
The net Force exerted toward the center of a curved path.
Centripetal Force
