The Scientific Method Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is the scientific method?
A process used to find answers to questions, helps us make observations and conduct experiments.
What is a hypothesis?
A testable statement proposing a potential explanation or prediction.
What is an observation?
A process of noticing details of something or someone in order to gain information.
How do scientist analyze results?
They use graphs, charts, or tables to help understand data.
What is a conclusion in an experiment?
Determining whether your hypothesis was right.
Why is it important to repeat experiments?
To make sure you get the same result every time.
What is a controlled experiment?
An investigation in which scientists change one variable.
What is the purpose of a control group?
To have something to compare to.
What should you do if your hypothesis is not supported?
Re-analyze the data.
Why do scientists use graphs?
To collect and review the results from an experiment.
4 most common types of graphs scientist use?
Pie charts, bar graphs, line graphs, x and y plots.
What is the x and y axis?
X is the horizontal and y is the vertical.
What are the essential parts of a graph?
Title, Data, Axis labeled, Units of measurement.
When should you use a line graph?
To track change over time.
When should you use a bar graph?
To compare things between different groups.
How do you find trends in a graph?
When the date minimizes and in lines it self.
What is a scatter plot?
To observe relationships between variables.
What is an independent variable?
A variable that stands alone and isn’t changes by the other variables.
What is a dependent variable?
A variable that changes as a result of the independent variable.
What is a control group?
The group in the study that doesn’t include things being tested.
What is the metric system?
Decimal based system of measurement.
Why do you need a control group?
To add a baseline, to compare the experimental group results.
What scale is most used by scientist when measuring temperature?
The Kelvin scale.
How many steps are there to the scientific method?
6
