2 components of mindfulness
Attention and acceptance
How does mindfulness encourage attention?
It encourages individuals to self regulate their attention. Encourages them to keep their attention on their immediate environment and experience, allowing for greater awareness
What does acceptance involve doing?
Acknowledging present experiences, individuals should approach such experiences with openness, curiosity and acceptance
What does mindfulness encourage in terms of acceptance?
Encourages individuals to accept the experience without criticism or judgement
6 factors that feature in a state of flow
- Intense and focused concentration on the present
- Merging of action and awareness
- Loss of reflective self-consciousness
- Sense of personal control over activity
- Altered experience of time
- Experiencing the activity as rewarding
.How does the flow impact your wellbeing?
Longer youre in the flow, happier you are because you feel like you are doing a lot of work.
Negative points about the flow
Can become addictive to those that experience them frequently. If they’re addicted, they may struggle with general life experiences where the flow is not there.

- Intense concentration
- Goal clarity
- Immediate feedback
- Challenge to skills ratio
3 Environmental triggers for entering the flow
- Concentration and focus when we detect danger in environment
- Rich environment - new environment, enriched with stimuli. Thus, our senses are heightened
- Deep embodiment - sense of control over physical performance
2 Theories of motivation
- Cognitive evaluation theory
- Self- determination
What does the cognitive evaluation theory aim to explain
Aims to explain the effects of external environment on our internal environment
What does the self determination theory focus on
Focuses on motivation behind decisions that people make when not being influenced externally
Intrinsic motivation
They benefit from it e.g. have fun playing sport
Extrinsic motivation
Reward or therell be consequences if they dont do something

What is the informational aspect of motivation?
The way you receive information about your ability impacts motivation
What is the controlling aspect of motivation?
How and why someone is deciding to do something - greater control means more motivated
Am i doing this for me or my teacher/parents?
Achievement goal theory
People are more motivated when they have clear goals
2 types of goals in the achievement goal theory
- Task orientated
- Ego orientated

Relies on extrinsic motivators

Individual’s sense of ability to control and succeed in life - how they percieve and approach challenges
