Questions Flashcards
(9 cards)
Determine what information cannot be obtained from physiological processes
How focused someone is
Brain structures involved in the sleep-wake cycle
Hypothalamus - sleep-wake cycle - regulates arousal
When awake, cells produce adenosine which fills up during the day
When dark, the pineal gland releases melatonin to aid in falling asleep
When waking up, the adrenal gland releases adrenaline
Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory in constructing a shed

Compare arousal with hyperarousal
Arousal is the normal state of waking consciousness whereas hyperarousal is the state of being in an altered state of consciousness due to hyperactivity. This may be induced from drugs.
Is our perception of time during sleep distorted?
Yes. Our hypothalamus’ role in regulating our sleep-wake also features an internal body clock. If we maintain the circadian rhythm, we maintain an internal body clock. If this happens, when we sleep, we can go to sleep and wake up before our alarm. If we have a poor circadian rhythm, our body clock is off and thus, time will slow down.
Differentiate between the information processing model and the multiple intelligences theory
The information processing model focuses on intelligence as a process rather than a measurable quantity. It also states that there are 3 ways of measuring intelligence by 1. speed of processing, 2.knowledge base, 3. Ability to learn and apply mental strategies
Two reasons why twin studies should be approached with caution
Most studies are done in western culture so a generalising statement cannot be made
Also, since twins usually grow up in the same household, they will tend to share the same intelligence because intelligence is based off nature vs nurture. In this case, twins usually have the same
Different methods by which intelligence is measured (8)
Aptitude - specialised skills e.g. hand eye coordination
Personality
Achievement
Creativity
Motivational
Diagnostic
Interest inventories - persons preference for certain activities for career
Neuropsychological tests - brain functioning and damage
3 factors that influence the amount of sleep someone needs
- Age
- Lifestyle
- Sleep debt
