Used to predict wide variety of health-related behaviours
Limitations
- no role for: emotions, social context, personality type
- health activities can be done for non-health reasons, e.g. fun
Social cognition
Bandura
Concentrates on interaction of personal, behavioural + social traits for shaping our motivation
Self-efficacy
An individual’s confidence in ability to execute task
Outcome expectations - beliefs some behaviours will result in outcomes
Efficacy - can the individual perform these behaviours
Role in health behaviour
- related to if people perform a behaviour,
- usually most powerful tool in predicting
- related to if performance successful
- perceived control allows: persistence, set more ambitious goals
