What’s wrong with extrinsic motivation?

A

If too much emphasis or overused:
A loss in value and incentive.
It may become the norm rather than the exception.
May play for the reward not for the true value.
May place too much pressure and could result in cheating/bending the rules.

How can a coach maintain motivation?

A

Offering reward and incentives early on
Making the activity fun and enjoyable
Allowing for success with easier tasks
Breaking the skill into parts, to allow success on each part
Pointing out health benefits of doing the task
Pointing out role models to whom performers can aspire.
Making the performer feel responsible for any success achieved by giving praise.
Attributing success internally
Settling goals or targets that are achievable
Using feedback to inspire and correct errors
