Movement of substances Flashcards
(8 cards)
Diffusion
Movement of particles from an area of high to low concentration
Concentration gradient
Difference in concentration. The higher the concentration gradient, the faster the diffusion
Osmosis
Movement of water from an area of high to low water potential
Turgid
When a cell is full of water and the cell membrane presses against the cell wall
Flaccid
When a cell has lost water and has shrunk, with the cell membrane pulling away from the cell wall
Active transport
Movement of substances from an area of high to low concentration using energy
Active transport in the intestines
Sugars in the bloodstream are carried into the cells lining the intestine, using active transport
Active transport in root hair cells
Plants use active transport to take in ions from the soil into the root hair cells for nutrition
