Variety of Living Organisms Flashcards
(13 cards)
Mnemonic for characteristics of living organisms
MRS C GREN
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Control, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
Eukaryotes
Organisms that have nuclei
Prokaryotes
Organisms that don’t have nuclei
What are the 4 eukaryotic kingdoms?
Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protist
What is the one prokaryotic kingdom?
Bacteria
Saprotrophic
Uses enzymes to digest food outside body then absorbs nutrients
Properties of plants
Multicellular, contain chloroplasts, carry out photosynthesis, have cellulose cell walls, store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose
Properties of animals
Multicellular, do not have chloroplasts, no photosynthesis, no cell walls, store carbohydrates as glycogen
Properties of fungi
No photosynthesis, made of multiple thread-like structures called hyphae, which make up a mycelium, cell walls made of chitin, saprotrophic, store carbohydrates as glycogen
Properties of protists
Very diverse, some perform photosynthesis, some are multicellular
Properties of bacteria
Unicellular, have cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, and plasmids, have a circular ring of DNA called a nucleoid
Levels of organisation in an organism
Organism, Organ System, Organ, Tissue, Cell, Organelle
Mnemonic for classification
King Philip Can Only Find Green Socks
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
