Equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2
Equation for respiration
C6H1206 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H20
Limiting factors in rate of photosynthesis
When one reactant (light, water, or carbon dioxide) cannot keep up with the increasing supply of the other, causing the rate of photosynthesis to level off
Effect of temperature on photosynthesis
Photosynthesis rate increases with temperature, because particles move more quickly, increasing chance of successful collision. Once past optimum temperature, enzyme denatures and photosynthesis rate slows down
Practical for measuring the rate of photosynthesis with different light intensities
An pondweed is placed under an inverted funnel in sodium hydrogencarbonate solution to measure photosynthesis by counting oxygen bubbles collected in an inverted boiling tube. A UV lamp is placed at different distances from the plant.
Human balanced diet
A diet that includes the apporpriate proportions of carbohydrate, protein, lipid, vitamins, minerals, water, and fibre
Main function of carbohydrates in the body
Store glucose as glycogen
Main functions of proteins in the body
Maintenance of body tissue
Main functions of lipids in the body
Store energy as fat
Main functions of water in the body
Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, coolant
Main functions of fibre in the body
Fibre attracts water to the digestive system and prevents constipation
Protein deficiency disease
Kwashiorkor
Calcium deficiency disease
Rickets
Vitamin B3 deficiency disease
Pellagra
Vitamin C deficiency disease
Scurvy
