What is the Enlightenment?
An intellectual and cultural movement in the eighteenth century that emphasized reason over superstition and science over blind faith.
What are Natural Rights?
Rights that are GOD-given and cannot be taken away/are inalienable, such as life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and property.
What is a Social Contract?
It’s when a group of people agree to give up certain rights and accept a central authority in order to protect their other rights.
Who is John Locke?
An Enlightenment thinker who argued that governments must protect the natural rights of their citizens or risk being overthrown.
What did John Locke emphasize?
Political power comes from the consent of the governed, and citizens have the right to alter or abolish a government if it fails to protect their rights.

A constitution after the French Revolution that established rights such as the right to life, freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, and equality before the law as ‘natural and inalienable’ rights.

One of the most successful generals of the French revolutionary armies, he was emperor of France from 1804-14, and in 1815.

A meeting to create a plan to keep peace throughout Europe and to devise a new political system for the continent.

A movement that removed colonial powers from the region and brought about Latin American independence.
Simon Bolivar
Simón Bolívar was revered as a revolutionary leader and hero in South America. After being inspired by his travels throughout Europe, Bolívar wanted the same for South America. He helped lead many Spanish colonies to freedom and inspired democracy. In fact, he had a country named after him
