Purpose of Informational Texts

A
  • Written to educate and enlighten readers
  • Almost always nonfiction and are rarely structured as a story
  • The intention is to deliver information
  • Clear structure
  • Thesis statement is one or two sentences that normally appears at the end of the first paragraph
  • Emphasis on clarity and precision
  • Do not usually appeal to the emotions
  • Often contain facts and figures and rarely include the opinion of the author

Purpose of Persuasive Writing

A
  • Written to attempt to change the reader’s mind or convince them of something they did not previously believe
  • Opinion is presented as fact
  • Emotional language
  • Will often try to play on the emotions of the reader or appeal to their sympathy or sense of morality
  • Will often give an unfair explanation of opposing positions, if these positions are mentioned at all

Purpose of Entertaining Texts

A
  • Written to entertain readers
  • The success or failure of an author’s intent to entertain is determined by those who read the author’s work
  • May be either fiction or nonfiction
  • Are often narratives or poems
  • Often contain colorful language that engages the imagination and the emotions
  • Often features a great deal of figurative language, which typically enlivens the subject matter with images and analogies
  • Tend to showcase the personality of the author more than other types of writing

Purpose of Expository Passage

A
  • Aims to inform and enlighten readers
  • Are nonfiction and tend to center around a simple, easily defined topic
  • Since the goal of exposition is to teach, such a passage should be as clear as possible
  • Usually will contain organizing words, such as first, next, for example, and therefore to keep the reader oriented I’m the text
  • The writer is often more concerned with clarity and comprehensibility than engaging the reader

  • Has characters
  • Often contains figurative language, which is meant to stimulate the imagination of readers by making comparisons and observations

Purpose of Technical Passage

A
  • Written to describe a complex object or process
  • Comon in medical and technological fields, in which. math, science, and engineering need to be explained simply and clearly
  • Usually proceeds in a very logical order
  • Often have clear headings and subheadings to keep the reader oriented in the text
  • Passages divide sections up with numbers or letters (Like an outline)
  • Amount of jargon or difficult vocabulary will vary based on intended audience (jargon can not always be avoided).
