Q

What is the duration of the Short Term Memory? Other stuff about the study?

A

Around 18 seconds, Peterson and Peterson. Trigrams were used, filler task given to prevent maintenance rehearsal, time for filler task gradually increased.

Q

What did Baddeley do? (With encoding of STM)

A

1966, gave participants 4 lists of words (on paper) then asked for recall immediately. He found that STM encodes acoustically as it was confused when words sounded similar.

Q

What did Baddeley do? (With encoding of LTM)

A

He upped the length of the list to 10 words, and asked for a distractor task to be done 4 times over a course of 20 minutes. Words with similar meanings were recalled the worst, suggesting Semantic recall.

Q

Support for the STM and LTM working separately?

A

Beardsley brain scanning, showed how prefrontal cortex was active during STM, but not LTM
