A
people from different places cming together to live in harmony and maintaining respect for their cultural and religious differences

A
multiculturism had failed
living separate lives
we needed freedom of speech and worship, democracy, rule of law and equal rights to gain a sense of national identity

A
- immigrants speak english
- britishness classes and teach british history in schools
- national citizenship service for 16 year olds

what are the limits to freedoms and values
A
- freedom of speech -> legal limits
- freedom of worship -> cultural/educational issues, the state can’t impose any particular belief
- democracy -> the electoral system, unrepresented, vote doesn’t count
- rule of law -> limited access due to funds, gov limits support
- equal rights -> still lengthy campaigns to overcome discrimination

what are the 3 possible futures of multiculturism
A
- minority ethnic groups integrate, influence dominant culture of the country, culture evolves, cultural integration occurs
- minority ethnic groups integrate and adopt some aspects of dominant culture but retain their own, live alongside indigenous population
- minority groups don’t integrate, retain own culture and reject the dominant culture
