Muscle fibres Flashcards
What is aerobic exercise?
Low intensity, high duration exercise in presence of oxygen
What is anaerobic exercise?
High intensity, low duration exercise with absence of oxygen
What are type 1 fibres called?
Slow twitch oxidative fibres
What are type 2a fibres called?
Fast twitch oxidative glycolytic fibres
What are type 2b fibres called?
Fast twitch glycolytic fibres
Example of when type 1 fibres are used
Marathon running
Examples of when type 2a fibres are used
800 metres, 1500 metres, 200 m freestyle
Examples of when 2b fibres are used
Shot put, 100 m sprint
What is phosphocreatine?
A high-energy compound stored in the muscle cell used as an anaerobic fuel for very high intensity energy production
What is glycogen?
A form of carbohydrate that is stored in you’re muscles and liver. It can be broken down without oxygen.
What is mitochondria?
A structure in the sarcoplasm responsible for aerobic energy production.
What is myoglobin?
A protein in the muscle responsible for transporting oxygen to the mitochondria
What is a motor neuron?
A nerve cell which conducts a nerve impulse to a group of muscle fibres
Neuron size in the fibres
1-small
2a-large
2b-large
Fibres per neuron in the fibres
1-few
2a-many
