musculoskeletal system Flashcards
(29 cards)
what are the 4 types of joints
-gliding joints
-hinge joints
-ball and socket joints
-fibrous/fused joints
function of the gliding joints
bones glide over each other collectively providing a wide range of movement
function of the hinge joints
allow movement in one plane
function of the ball and socket joints
allows movement in more than one plane
function of fibrous/fused joints
bones interlock there is no movement
example of where gliding joints are
between vertebrates, wrist bones, ankle bones
example of where hinge joints are
in the knee and elbow
example of where ball and socket joints are
in the hip and shoulder
example of where fibrous/fused joints are
in that cranium
what is the vertebral column
its a support for the body that is flexible to allow bending and twisting but provides protection for the spinal cord
why is the vertebral column flexible
to allow bending and twisting
what is the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction and what does it state
its a theory of muscle contraction and it states than thin acting filaments slide in between the thick myosin filaments during muscle contraction
what is the synovial joint
its a moveable muscle
why are the ends of bones covered in cartilage
as it provides a smooth surface which decreases friction as the ends of the bones glide over each other
what are ligaments
strong fibrous tissue that links bone to bone
what does the synovial fluid do
it acts as a shock absorber and reduces friction in the joints it also supplies oxygen and nutrients to the chondrocytes in the cartilage
what does the musculoskeletal system provide
its provides form, support, stability and movement to the body
what is the musculoskeletal system made up of
bones of the skeleton, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints and other connective tissue that supports and binds the tissue and organs together
what are the function of the musculoskeletal system
-supporting the body
-allowing motion
-protecting vital organs
what are joints
they are structures that connect individual bones and may allow bones to move against each other to cause movement
what if the function of a ligament
to connect one bone to another
what is the function of cartilage
it protects the ends of the bones
what is the function of the synovial membrane
it produces the lubricant synovial fluid
what is the function of the synovial fluid
it lubricates the joint capsule
