the nervous system Flashcards
(18 cards)
what is the central nervous system comprised of
the brain and the spinal cord
how is information sent the the central nervous system
information is sent from receptors to the CNS where it is processed
what is the brain and spinal cord surrounded by
tough, connective membranes for protection
what is the specific name of the connective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord
the meninges
what are the brain and spinal cord enclosed by
bone
what is the periphal nervous system comprised of
all the other nerves to the extremities and organs
what do the sensory neuron’s do
carry messages from the periphal sensory organs to the CNS
wear do motor neurones do
convey instructions from the CNS to effector organs such as muscles or glands
nae the main parts of a nerve
-dentrites
-axon
-mylein sheath
-axon terminal
-cell body
-nucleus
-axon endings
-synaptic end bulbs
what are dendrites and there function
fibres carrying impulses towards the cell body
what is the function of the cell body
contains the nucleus and most of the cytoplasm
what is the function of nucleus
contains DNA for protein synthesis
what are axons and there function
fibre carrying impulses away from cell body
what is the myelin sheath made of
Schwann cells
what is the myelin sheath and its function
its an insulation material that covers the axons
why does the myelin sheath have small gaps in it and what are they called
the small gaps in the myelin sheath are called nodes of ranvier and they speed up conditions of nerve impulse
what are axon endings
they are where neurotransmitters are made
what is the function of synaptic end bulbs
they secrete neurotransmitters into synaptic clefts causing impulses to transmit in the next neurone
