Naming Hydrocarbons Flashcards
Alkanes
Used as solvents , fuels
Alkenes
Used for plastic and ripens food when naming you number the double bond
Alkynes
Used in pharmaceuticals number the triple bond
Cycloalkanes
Rings of carbon when naming add cyclo before the alkane name used for motor fuels, natural gases, heavy oils
Aromatics
Benzene uses in labs it’s very stable so it’s used to make other compounds
Alcohols
R-OH ends with -ol used in cleaning products and ethane is drinkable
Ethers
R-O-R ends in -ane name shorter r group with -oxy used as solvents and assiditives (make you sleepy)
Aldehydes
Double bonded oxygen on terminal
Carbon ends in al , used as flavoring
Ketones
Like aldehydes but the double bonded oxygen I’d in the middle ends in -none used as solvents and flavoring
Carboxylic acids
Ends in -oic acid after naming the longest chain of carbon has a double bonded oxygen on the terminal carbon and also OH used as soaps and preservatives, medicine too
Esters
Has an r group single bonded to an oxygen then an r group double bonded to an oxygen first r group ends in -yl the second one ends in
-oate used as flavors, fragrances
