The state continued to operate under the precepts of French law, which had been codified in1800 and went to efefct four years later.
What is France’s Napoleonic code?
It concerns itself with civil law and represents a compromise between the different legal systems of northern and southern France when Napoleon took power.
It preserves traditional patterns of inheritance, but also provided more freedom for the frenchies.
So how is it it related to the State of Lousiana ?
In 1808; Lousiana put into effect a civil law based on the Napoleonic code, a new adaptation of which was institued in 1825 and still remains the basis of Lousiana’s present ciivil law.
Thus, what is indicated under this Lousiana civil law?
Under Lousiana Civil Law, any property belonging to a spouse prior to marriage become the property of both spouses once they were wed.
This law shed light on the dynamics of the play; Stan, a polish immigrant married to Stella whose a daughter of a family whose declining fortunes have recently included a plantation; He asserts his ownership intrest in the DuBois property, which became his also at the time of his marriage.
