Natural and Artificial Selection Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is Natural Selection?
When certain characteristics change over MANY generations, as organisms with heritable traits survive and reproduce.
What stimulates natural selection?
Selective pressures.
What is seletive pressure? Give an example from each of 2 categories of selective pressures. Describe breifly.
It’s when specific environmental conditions select for one traits over the other. There are biotic and abiotic factors.
Example of biotic: other animals learned how to eat more berries and now bears have none.
Example of abiotic: the drought came over a region where animals depend on rains.
How is the ability to produce more viable offspring called?
Fitness.
What are some examples of Artificial Selection?
Corn, wild mustard, cows, dogs.
