Natural hazards and tectonic hazards Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
What occurs at a destructive plate margin?
A
- A continental and oceanic plate move towards each other.
- The heavier and denser oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate.
3.Frictionbetween the plate causes an earthquake to occur
4.The oceanic plate continues to subduct into the mantle and melts - The oceanic plate melts into the mantle and mixes with sea water.
6.This liquid then rises up through the cracks in the mantle, resulting in a volcanic eruption
2
Q
4 Layers of the earth
A
- Crust - surface of the planet divided into two tectonic plates. The oceanic plate is heavier and denser than the continental plate.
- Mantle - the second layer which is molten rock
- Outercore - the third layer which is liquid nickel and iron
- Innercore - the final layer which is solid nickel and iron
2
Q
Why do tectonic plates move
A
1.convection currents move the plates
2.Ridge push/ slab pull. Where the oceanic crust sinks into the mantle pulling the plate down with it
3
Q
What occurs at a conservative plate margin?
A
- Two plates slide past each other
- As the move they get caught on each other
- Pressure builds up and is released as an earthquake when the plates suddenly jolt free
4
Q
What occurs at a constructive plate margin?
A
- Two plates move away from eachother
- Creating a gap in the earth
- Magma from the mantle rises up to fill the gap leading to a volcanic eruption
- Small earthquakes also occur due to the small movement of magma rising.
4
Q
What is a natural hazard
A
A natural hazard is an extreme event which threatens property and human life
