Nature of God Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is meant by omnipotent
All powerful
What is meant by omnibenevolent
All loving
What is meant by omniscient
All knowing
What is meant by eternal
Timeless, atemporal outside the constraints of time
What is meant by everlasting
Lasting forever on the same time line as humanity, sempiternal
What is the reason for the omnipotence paradox
would God create a stone to heavy to lift or a knot he cant untie?
with the omnipotent paradox what could we argue was meant my the word omnipotent
That can do anything that is possible with maximal power
What quote from creation shows God is omnipotent
“And God said, let there be light, and there was light”
What quote describes God creating rain to help humans survive
“he calls for the water of the sea and pouts then out over the face of the land”
“For no word from God will ever fail”
What does this mean
As God promised a child and wouldnt go back on that promise and made it so they wouldnt have to wait that long
“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God”
Means
That rich and greedy people will find it difficult to get to heaven
“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”
means
God can do things that humans cant and will save out souls
What does Descartes opinions on omnipotent
God can do absolutely anything, even if they are logical contradiction
According to Descartes why can go do lofical contradictions
he made the laws of maths and shapes and so can change them (e.g., he can make 2+2=5)
why cant we deny evil
we have too much empircal evidence to deny it
What is the two types of evil
Natural
Moral
What is the inconsistent triad
If God knows about evil and can stop evil he must want to stop it, so isn’t omnibenevolent
and vias versa for the other things
What do some theodicies say that state moral evil comes from
as a result of free will
Why will we need free will
to autonomous beings who free chose to love god
Why is Descartes view is nonsensical
Logical contradiction. Claims God can do simply not things. God cant get more than 100% on a test does not diminish God’s power to get more than 100% is nonsense
What happens that if god becomes an arbitrary tyrant
Gods rules can change at any point and this would make it impossible for humans to have relationship with him
How does the bible go against Descartes
“it is impossible for god to lie”
How can omnipotence be good to view span over 100 years
Gives the argument longevity/ stood the test of time
What quotes supports Aquinas opinions on omnipotent
“He can do everything that is absolutely possible”
“Everything that does not imply a contradiction is among those possibilities in respect of which God is called omnipotent”
