nature vs nurture Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is heritability
the percentage of variation in personality traits is due to genes- arguing genetic variations underpin parts of our personality.
candidate gene approach- role of 7R gene
it is associated with novelty seeking- people with this allele have cheated on their partner and the gene is now known as the wanderlust gene.
what is the serotonin transporter gene
terminates the action of serotonin by facilitating its uptake- individuals with this allele had higher neuroticism scores.
what are genome association studies?
instead set markers across whole genome- they found associations but only expains 1% of variation.
gene-gene interactions
the presence of one gene could affect you finding an effect on another gene.
what is the epigenome?
secondary layer of biocehmical information that mpdify or mark the genome in a way that alters the DNA nstructions.
early experience and personality - Nurture
childhood experience could explain variation in personality as most agree that heritability is noth 100%. this comes from self-rating scales for personality.
what is the belskey, steinberg and draper hypothesis 1991:
individuals differ in sex and relationship behaviours- what if promiscuous behaviour was an adpative response- harsh development is predicted to stimuate earlier puberty and sexual activity.
childhood adversity and infidelity in adulthood:
retrospective study- thsoe who cheat on their own partner with other married partners on average faced more stress in childhood.
puberty prediction
maltreated girls reached pubertal maturity 8 months earlier than non maltreated girls.
what is RBFOX1 linked to
it is a RNA-binding protein that regulates splicing in neurons- its linked to several conditions.
fundamentals of “evo devo” biology
20,000 genes that code for proteins but their are over 1,000,000 unique types of protein.
developmental systems theory
all biological processes operate by continually assembling new strictures. each structure is irreducible to any lower level of structure and can only be described in its own terms.
