What is a map?
A map is a scaled indicator of a portion of earth’s surface
What type of map is a military maps usually?
Military maps are usually topographic maps
What is found on a military map?
- They show man made and natural features
- Contour lines
What are the 6 features which appear in the marginal information on a map?
- Title information
- Production Information
- Universal Grid Reference
- North Point Diagram
- Scale and Contour
- Legend
What are eastings?
Eastings are the vertical lines on the map
What are northings?
Northings are the horizontal lines on the map
What order is a grid reference given in?
The eastings is always given before the northings
What do contours close together indicate?
They indicate steep slopes
What do contours far apart indicate?
They indicate gentle slopes
When the spacing of contours is decreasing the slope is …
Convex (going up)
When the spacing of contours is increasing the slope is …
Concave (going down)
How does the Mil System work?
The mil system divides the circle into 6400 mils
What points are North, East, South and West respectively on a MILS compass?
North - 6400
East - 1600
South - 3200
West - 4800
Why is the mil system preferred in the army?
It is convenient as 1 mil subtends approximately 1m at 1000m
What are the three types of north?
True North, Grid North and Magnetic North
What is true north?
It is the direction of the geographic North Pole
What is grid north?
It is the direction in which the eastings point towards the top of the map
What is magnetic north?
It is the direction in which a compass needle points when affected only by the earth’s magnetic field
How to convert from grid to magnetic bearing?
Subtract 200 mils
GMS - Grand Ma Sucks
How to convert from magnetic to grid bearings?
Add 200 mils
MGA - My Great Apples
What are the features of a map? BOLTS
Border Orientation Legend Title Scale
What are some example of other types of maps?
- civilian map
- hydrographical map
- aeronautic charts
What is a knoll and how is it represented?
- A hill top
- Shown by a loop contour or several concentric loop contours
What is a spur and how is it represented?
- A lateral ridge or tongue of land descending from a hill
- Shown by a u or v created by contour lines pointing away from the high point
