(86 cards)
Define Collision
Occurs when a vessel hits another vessel
Define Aground
Occurs when a vessel runs into land and remains fast. Soft grounding is when a vessel gets loose under their own power, while hard grounding is when a vessel requires help to get loose or is damaged beyond repair
What is Advance in navigation?
The distance the vessel moves forward along its original course from the time the rudder is put over until steady on new course
What is Transfer in navigation?
The distance the vessel moves perpendicular to the original course during the turn
What factors affect Advance and Transfer?
Speed and/or rudder angle
Define Pivot Point
A point on the center line about which the ship turns when the rudder is put over
Where is the Pivot Point when in normal steaming?
The centerline pelorus
Where is the Pivot Point when accelerating?
The bow
Where is the Pivot Point when in astern propulsion?
The stern
Define Acceleration
Increase of velocity
Define Deceleration
Decrease of velocity
What determines the speed of Acceleration and Deceleration?
Environmental factors such as sea state and depth of water, and size and draft of vessel
What is the Turning Circle?
The path followed by the ship’s pivot point when making a 360 turn
What affects the diameter of the Turning Circle?
Rudder angle and speed
Define True Bearing
Expressed as a horizontal angle measured clockwise from true north (000-359)
Define Relative Bearing
The angle between the ship’s forward direction (bow) and the location of another object
What does DIW stand for?
A vessel that is underway and making no way through the water, whether by choice or exceptional circumstance
What is Head On in navigation?
When two power-driven vessels are meeting on reciprocal or nearly reciprocal courses
What does a vessel do in a Crossing situation?
The vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way
Define Overtaking in navigation
A vessel shall be deemed to be overtaking when coming up to another vessel from a direction more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam
What is the Stand On vessel?
The vessel that is directed to maintain her course and speed in a meeting with another vessel
What is the Give Way vessel?
The vessel that is directed to maneuver by changing her course and/or speed to keep out of the way of another vessel
Define Swing Circle
Centered at the anchor position, used to check for navigational hazards and other anchored ships while at anchor
What is the radius of the Swing Circle?
Equal to the sum of the ship’s length and the scope of the anchor chain released
