Radar Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the differences between 2D & 3D radars?
3D includes altitude (bearing, range, & altitude)
Describe the AN/SPS 49A (V)1.
The SPS 49 is the primary air radar, its maximum range is 256 nautical miles, spins @ 6/12 rpms, it’s 2D but can be 3D with Up Spot. Accessible locations are Radar Room, CIC (remote console), antenna located on Main Mast.
Describe the AN/SPS 73.
The SPS 73 is the primary nav, secondary surface radar, maximum range is 100 nautical miles, spins @ 24 rpms, it’s a 2D radar, display console is a Stand Alone Operators Platform (SAOP), and can display 73 or 67 video. Accessible locations are SOAP in Pilot House, RVCA in CIC, antenna located on Main Mast.
Describe the AN/SPS 67A (V).
The SPS 67A (V) is the primary surface, secondary nav radar, also tertiary air search radar (for low flying, slow moving aircrafts), maximum range is 100 nautical miles, spins @ 15 rpms, and is 2D. Location is in CIC (remote console), antenna located on Main Mast.
Describe the AN/SPA 25G.
The SPA 25G provides visual representation of the radars (49, 67, 73, & IFF). There are 4 in total (2 in CIC and 2 on the bridge).
What is an IFF and what are its modes?
IFF is a radar that identifies friend or foe, consisting of UPA-59, UPX-41, UPX-36, APX-123, C-12664/APX. It has 5 modes: * 1; 2-digit mission code * 2; 4 digit ID * 3A; Com air/military * 4; Crypto (military) Obsolete, replaced with Mode 5 * C; Altitude in thousands.
What is the UPA 59A?
The UPA 59A is the decoder for friend or foe (AIMS MK XII) and there are 2 in CIC.
What is the AN/UPX-41, how many do we have, and what are they used for?
The UPX-41 is an IFF Interrogator. There are 2 total: one for SPS-67 for surface and one for SPS-49 for air. It interrogates contacts for their modes of IFF.
What is the UPX-36?
IFF is the control processor, kind of like the Main Brain of the system. It shows UPX-41, UPA-59, external interfaces, and SSDS.
What is the APX-123? What does it do?
The APX-123 is the transponder for IFF, it transmits all modes, and sends our information out when we are interrogated by other contacts.
What is the C-12664/APX?
The C-12664/APX is the remote for the APX-123 in CIC.
What is the URN-32 TACAN?
TACAN stands for Tactical Air Navigation. It gives aircraft’s bearing & range to own ship, provides (AIDS) Azimuth, Identification, Direction, and Squiter. Supports unlimited aircraft but is set for 100. Antenna is located at the top of mast, system location in EW/TACAN shop, remote in CIC. Two modes: * 1; On Air (provides AIDS at all times) * 2; On Demand (provides AIDS when requested by an aircraft).
What are the two forms of GPS onboard USS HFY? And what are their uses?
Primary is NAVSSI GPS: connects to 4 satellites to establish a Figure of Merit (FOM). Secondary is PSN-13 (DAGR) Handheld GPS.
What is VMS? Describe it. Where are they located?
VMS are the electronic version of charts. There are 5 monitors/stations: * 2 in the pilothouse * 1 in CIC * 1 in chart room * 1 in captain’s cabin.
What does the fathomometer do?
The fathometer measures the depth of the water in fathoms/ft. The primary unit is in Chart room, and the remote is in Pilot House (above QMOW table).
What is the primary purpose of the GYRO?
Gyro’s primary is the WSN-7B Ring Laser Gyro which gives us digital and analog information such as position, speed, attitude. Attitude consists of pitch, roll, and heading and is used as an INS - Inertial Navigation System.
What is the auxiliary function of the GYRO?
Its auxiliary is the MK-27, provides analog information, and provides heading only.
What is a gyro repeater?
Receives information from the ship’s gyro and gives bearing information.
What is the DHYSL WSN-9?
Digital hybrid speed log; Pitsword; Ships speed and Distance traveled through water.
What is a DDRT? And what does it do?
The DDRT is the Digital Dead Reckoning Tracer. It plots with a PMP (Parallel Motion Tracker), shows visual representation of true picture that plots everything within 20NM. Speed inputs from DHYSL, heading inputs from Gyro (WSN-7B).
What is an anemometer?
An anemometer provides wind speed and direction, the Port and Stbd birds are on yardarms, and there is 1 transmitter in gyro.
What are Red Phones? And what are they used for?
Redphones are a nickname for Radio Telephones, used for external communications with other ships, submarines, aircrafts, and land bases.
What is EMCON?
EMCON is Emission Control, it limits the intelligence the enemy can gather, secures emitters so other units can’t use it against us, and aims to be more beneficial to own forces than to an enemy. Set conditions are A, A1, B, C, and D.
What is the purpose of the CSOSS?
CSOSS provides step by step turn on/off procedures, basic troubleshooting, aids in effective communications for casualty control.
