Neoplasm (tumor) Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is neoplasm?
cellular growth that is no longer responding to normal regulator processes
what is carcinogenesis?
process of cancer development
what are the stages of carcinogenesis?
1) initiation
2) promotion
3) progression
describe initiation stage of carcinogenesis
exposure of the cell to substance or event that causes DNA damage or mutation
describe promotion stage of carcinogenesis
mutated cell exposure to factors that promote growth
describe progression stage of carcinogenesis
tumor invades, metastasizes, and becomes drug resistant. this stage is permanent and irreversible
what are oncogenes?
activate cell division and influence embryonic development
what does anaplasia mean?
loss of cell differentiation, you can’t tell malignant cells apart from normal cells
if a cell is more anapestic, what is it compared to a normal cell?
less resemblance
are benign cells more or less anaplastic?
less, because they are more like original cells and are less likely to cause problems
what contributes to tumor cell growth?
blood supply, location, age, gender, health status and immune function
