Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
What allows you to react with what’s around you
What is a stimulus?
A change in environmental
Give me some examples of a stimulus?
-bright light
-loud noise
-change in temperature
-touch/pressure
-medicine
What are receptors?
A group of cells that detect a change in environment (stimulus)
When the body detects a change in environment what is the first stage that happens?
The information is converted into an nervous impulse and sent along sensory neurones to the CNS
What is the CNS?
The brain and spinal cord
What happens once the nervous impulse has been sent to the CNS via sensory neurones?
The CNS decides how it will react to the stimulus and impulses are sent through relay neurones in the CNS
What happens once the impulse has been sent through relay neurones in the CNS?
The CNS sends information to an effector through motor neurones, then the effector responds accordingly to what the CNS decided
What is the function of Sensory neurones?
To carry electrical signals (nerve impulses) towards the CNS
What is the structure of sensory neurones?
-one long Dendron (carries impulse towards the cell body)
-cell body in the middle
-a short Axon (carries impulses towards CNS
What is the function of relay neurones?
To carry nerve impulses within the CNS
What is the structure of relay neurones?
-short Dendrites (carries impulse from sensory neurones to cell body)
-cell body in the middle
-a Axon (carries nerve impulses from the cell body to motor neurones
What is the function of Motor neurones?
Carries impulses away from the CNS towards the effectors
What is the structure of Motor neurones?
- short Dendrites (carries impulses from CNS towards cell body
-cell body in the middle
-one long Axon (carries nerve impulses from cell body to effector cell)
What is an effector?
Muscle or gland that acts to respond to a stimulus
