Nervous System #2 Flashcards
(23 cards)
What structure protects the spinal cord?
Meninges:connective tissue covering the brain and spinal cord to provide protection and nourishment
List six functions of the brain
Thoughts/memory, speech/language, five senses, balance/coordination, behavior/emotion, judgment
What are two functions of the spinal cord?
Connects the peripheral nervous system to the brain and coordinates simple reflexes
What is the spinal nerve? Are they primarily mix sensory or motor nerves?
Typically a mixed nerve that carries motor and sensory signals between spinal cord and body
What are the 12 nerves that emerge directly from the brain?
Cranial nerves
What is in aferent nerve fiber?
Sensory nerve fibers that carry nerve impulses from receptors for the spinal cord and brain
Compare and contrast a somatic sensory nerve and visceral sensory nerve
This sacral sensory nerves transport sensory information from organs to brain and spinal cord while the somatosensory nerves transport sensory information from skin muscle and joint and special senses to brain and spinal cord
List and describe the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic – fight or flight response parasympathetic – calming/rest and digest division
What is a efferent nerve fiber?
Motor nerve fibers that carry nerve impulses from CNS two muscles organs and body
Compare and contrast a somatic motor nerve and and autonomic motor nerve
Somatic motor nerves carry information from brain and spinal cord to voluntary muscles while autonomic motor nerves carry information from brain and spinal cord to organs, heart, and glands, or voluntary muscles
Describe the following: dermatome, myotome ,sclerotome
Dermatome: area of skin supplied by nerves from a single spinal nerve root Myotome: muscle or muscle group supplied by nerves from a single spinal nerve root
Sclerotome: the area of bone innervated by a single spinal nerve root
Receptor:
An organ or cell able to respond to light heat or other external stimulus and transmits a signal to a sensory nerve
Sensory nerve:
Enclosed cable like a bundle of sensory nerve fibers in peripheral system
Interneuron:
A neuron that forms a connection between other neurons
Motor neuron:
nerves that carry signals from spinal cord to muscles to produce movement
Effector muscle:
Muscle, gland, or organ capable of binding to a stimulus especially in nerve impulse
What type of neuron is in the dorsal root of a spinal nerve?
Sensory nerves – afferent
If I touch a hot stove with structure send info to the sensory nerve?
spinal nerves – spinal cord – brain
What type of nerve is in the ventral route of a spinal nerve?
Contains motor nerves – efferent
What structure located in the gray matter spinal cord transmits information between sensory nerve and motor nerves?
Cell bodies
In order to prevent severe burn due to touching a hot stove motor nerves send information what structure?
Motor nerves send information to muscles
List the number of spinal nerves in each of the following segments
– Cervical: C1 – C8
– Sacral: S1 – S5
– Thoracic: T1 – T
– Lumbar: L1 – L5
What are four types of plexuses?
– Cervical plexus
– Brachial plexus
– Lumbar plexus
– sacral plexus
