Nervous System Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is respiration using electron acceptors other than molecular oxygen. Although oxygen is not used as the final electron acceptor,
what do receptor cells do?
special proteins found within and on the surface of certain cells throughout the body, including breast cells.
what do sensory neurones do?
Sensory neurons are nerve cells within the nervous system responsible for converting external stimuli from the organism’s environment into internal electrical impulses.
what do motor neurones do?
is a neuron whose cell body is located in the motor cortex, brainstem or the spinal cord.
what do effectors do?
An effector is any part of the body that produces the response.
what is a hormone?
a regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood or sap to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action.
where are hormones released from?
The anterior pituitary gland produces the following hormones and releases them into the bloodstream: adrenocorticotropic hormone, which stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete steroid hormones, principally cortisol.
how do hormones travel round the body?
Hormones travel throughout the body, either in the blood stream or in the fluid around cells, looking for target cells.
what is the name of the specific organ that hormones act on?
The Anterior Lobe of the pituitary plays the ‘master’ role secreting six major hormones that affect most of the body
