Plants Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the function of the palisade mesophyll layer?
The epidermis protects the leaf and is transparent to let light through.
What is the function of the guard cells?
Guard cells are cells surrounding each stoma. They help to regulate the rate of transpiration by opening and closing the stomata.
What is the function of the cuticle?
In addition to its function as a permeability barrier for water and other molecules
Upper epidermis
This is a single layer of cells containing few or no chloroplasts.
Palisade mesophyll cell
Palisade cells are plant cells located in leaves, right below the epidermis and cuticle.
Spongy mesophyll cell
Palisade mesophyll cells are tall and closely packed to absorb maximum light. They contain many chloroplasts.
Lower epidermis
The most important structure on a leaf’s lower epidermis is the mouth-shaped opening called the stoma.
Stoma
Taking in oxygen is very important because it allows your cells to do things, like make energy from the food you eat.
Vein
Veins provide support for the leaf and transport both water and minerals (via xylem) and food energy (via phloem) through the leaf and on to the rest of the plant
