Nervous System Flashcards
(19 cards)
What makes up the central nervous systems?
The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system.
What makes up the peripheral nervous systems?
Consists of the nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord. The main function of the PNS is to connect the central nervous system (CNS) to the limbs and organs.
What is an example of a voluntary action?
Moving your arms
What in an example of an action that is not voluntary or under conscious control? One that is controlled by the autonomic nervous system?
The hear beating
What is a neuron?
A specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell.
What are the three kinds of neurons?
Sensory, interneuron, and motor neuron
What is synapse?
The gap between two neurons
How to nerve impulses travel across the synapse?
Nerve impulses become chemical signals to cross gap
What are the five senses?
Touch, taste, smell, hearing, and seeing
What is a reflex action?
Signal that bypasses normal route, goes straight to spinal cord to allow or an immediate response thus avoiding injury.
Neuron
Transfer messages throughout body in form of electrical signals (impulse)
Dendrite
Short branches
Cell body
Is with nucleus and organelles dendrites, axon, and axon terminal
Axon
The tube that connects the nucleus to the axon terminals
Axon Terminal
Gets the impulses from the receptors
Receptors
get the impulses and give it the axon terminal
Sensory Neuron
- Collect information
- Send into the CNS for processing
Motor neurons
- send impulses from CNS to other systems
- cause muscles to contract
Intemeurons
- found in brain and spinal cord
