nervous system stuff Flashcards
what is the function of afferent fibers?
to convey information from the receptors in the PNS to the CNS
what is the function of the efferent fibers?
to convey information from the cns to the effectors in the pns
what is the function of the somatic nervous system?
to convey information from the nsa to the skeletal muscles
what is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
to convey information from the cns to the smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands
what is the functional unit of the nervous system?
the neuron
what is a nerve fiber
consists of axon covered by sheath-they may be myelinated or unmylenated
what is a nerve?
a bundle of nerve fibers held together by connective tissue and located outside the cns
what are the four basic types of nerve fibers?
- afferent
- efferent to skeletal muscles
- autonomic preganglionic efferent
- autonomic postganlionic efferent
what do neurons of the and innervate?
all smooth muscle, all cardiac muscle, all glands
name the pairs of cranial nerves
8 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral 1 coccygeal
for the body wall extremities where is the location of the cell bodies of afferent fibers?
dorsal root ganglion
for the body wall extremities where is the location of the cell bodies of efferent to skeletal muscle fibers?
ventral grey horn
for the body wall extremities where is the location of the cell bodies of preganglionic efferent fibers?
imlcc
for the body wall extremities where is the location of the cell bodies of post ganglionic efferent fibers?
sympathetic trunk
what are the 3 types of nerves that supply skeletal muscle?
efferent- afferent- postganglionic efferent
what nerve fiber types supply skin
afferent and postganglionic efferent
how many neurons are in an ans chain?
2
what vertebral levels is the imlcc located
t1-l2 (l3)
what are the 2 ways a preganglionic neuron can synapse to innervate the body wall?
- they can synapse in the sympathetic ganglia of the same vertebral level- the postganlionic fibers innervate the effectors
- the pregangloinic fibers can ascend or descend the sympathetic trunk to reach other levels of the spinal cord
how does sympathetic innervation reach the head?
it ascends the sympathetic trunk and then hitch-hikes on arterial supply
sympathetic innervation to the head: where do the preganlionic fibers synapse?
in the superior, middle, or inferior ganglia
