NETWORK FUNDAMENTALS Flashcards
NETWORK COMPONENTS (16 cards)
What are servers?
Devices that provide resources to the network
What are hubs?
Hubs are older network devices that connects other devices like clients and servers over a local area network.
However they do have some limitations such as increased network errors due to their broadcasting nature
Hubs evolved ->Bridges-> Switches
What are switches?
They are smarter hubs that provides more security and more efficient bandwidth utilization. They forward traffic from one port to the intended destination port.
What are the WAPs(Wireless Access Points)
They allow wireless devices to connect to a wired network
What are routers?
They are devices used to connect different networks together
What are firewalls?
They are security barriers between internal networks and the external world(Usually the internet)
What are load balancers?
They are devices or software that distribute network or application traffic across multitple servers
What are proxy servers?
They act as intermediary between the user’s device and the internet. They can provide web filtering, shared network connections and data caching, enhance security and privacy
What are IDS?
IDS : Intrusion Detection System -> They detect unauthorized access or anomalies and alert administrators
What are IPS?
IPS: Intrusion Prevention Systems, they not only detect threats , but they also take action to prevent intrusion
What are controllers?
They are central units used to manage flow control to network devices
What are NAS?
NAS : Network Attached Storage Device , they are dedicated file storage system that provide data access to heterogenous group of clients
What are SANs?
SAN :Storage Area Network provide access to consolidated block level data storage
What are medias
In networking, it refers to the physical material used to transmit data
What are WAN?
WAN : Wide Area Network are used to connect networks over large geographic areas
