Network Media Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is network media?
Network media refers to the physical or wireless pathways that transmit data between devices in a network.
What are the two main types of network media?
- Guided media (wired)
- Unguided media (wireless)
What is guided media in networking?
Guided media uses physical cables to transmit signals, including twisted pair cables, coaxial cables, and fiber optic cables.
What is twisted pair cable and where is it used?
Twisted pair cable is made of pairs of insulated copper wires twisted together to reduce interference. It is widely used in LANs and telephone networks.
What are the types of twisted pair cables?
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
- Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
What is coaxial cable?
Coaxial cable consists of a central conductor, insulating layer, metallic shield, and outer cover. It’s used for cable TV and older Ethernet networks.
What is fiber optic cable?
Fiber optic cable transmits data as light through glass or plastic fibers, offering high bandwidth, long-distance transmission, and resistance to electromagnetic interference.
What is unguided media?
Unguided media refers to wireless communication methods such as radio waves, microwaves, and infrared that transmit signals through the air.
What is Wi-Fi in terms of network media?
Wi-Fi is a wireless communication technology using radio waves to provide high-speed internet and network access to devices.
What are the advantages of fiber optic cables?
High speed, long-distance capability, high security, and immunity to electromagnetic interference.
What are the disadvantages of wireless media?
Susceptibility to interference, security risks, and limited range compared to wired media.
What factors influence the choice of network media?
Factors include cost, distance, bandwidth, security, and environmental conditions.
