Neural Structure Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the ventricular system?
Ventricular system controls waste management. It’s not only hard for substances to enter the brain, but also leave the brain. So the Ventricular system leaks into the blood and is removed by the kidney and intestines.
Name the parts of the brain that form the Basal Ganglia.
Putamen, Thalamus, Subthalamic nucleus, Substantia nigra, Caudate nucleus, Globus Pallidus Lateral and Medial.
What is the Parietal Cortex important for?
processing and interpreting somatosensory input. it helps us to integrate sensory input and construct a spatial representation of the world.
What is the Frontal Cortex important for?
voluntary movement, expressive language and for higher cognitive skills, such as executive functioning
What is the Occipital Cortex involved in?
involved in the processing of visual information and perception, including colour, form and motion
What is the Temporal Cortex involved in?
processing auditory information and the encoding of memory. However, they are also important in processing affect and emotions. Finally, parts of the temporal cortex are involved in language and visual perception.
What is the Cerebellum involved in?
coordination of voluntary (especially fine) motor control, balance and equilibrium. However, there is also recent evidence to suggest it may be involved in cognitive functioning.
Name four parts of the subcortical region.
Cingulate Cortex, Thalamus, Amygdala and Septum.
What is the thalamus involved in?
It is the relay station for all sensory information.
Why is the Basal Ganglia important?
voluntary motor control, especially in relation to flexibility of motor tasks. Also has a cognitive function.
