Neuro review and CVA Flashcards
(23 cards)
fx of frontal lobe
executive function, thinking, planning, organizing, problem solving, emotions, behavior control, personality
fx of motor cortex
movement
fx parietal lobe
perception, making sense of the world, arithmetic, spelling
fx of occipital lobe
vision
fx of temporal lobe
memory understanding, language
what is the prefrontal cortex
helps people set and achieve goals by way of executive functioning
plays a role in personality
Hershle’s gyrus
auditory processing center
left temporal lobe
language and learning/remembering verbal info
right temporal lobe
responsible for learning/remembering non verbal info
what is brocha’s aphasia
cognitively aware of what they are trying to say but cannot make mouth form words (broken)
what is wernickes aphasia
talking gibberish but think they are speaking normally
what is global aphasia
ALL aspects of language are impaired- speaking, understanding, writing, reading,
what is the insula
below the cerebrum and separates the temporal lobe from parietal cortex- allows for pain perception, body and self- awareness
how do we find information about clients?
imaging, physician notes, nurses notes, client interview, family+support system interview
how do CVAs occur?
blood flow is disrupted or a rupture occurs
ischemic
most common and results from a thrombosis (clot) or emboli (traveling clot)
hemorrhagic
bleeding into brain tissue from hypertension, aneurysms or head injury
what are cortical symptoms of CVA
impacting areas of cerebral cortex-frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital
what are subcortical symptoms of CVA
impact structures below the cortex such as internal capsule, basal ganglia, thalamus, brainstem, and cerebellum
MCA symptoms
middle cerebral artery
most frequent
contralateral weakness
sensory loss
visual field loss or neglect
increase deep tendon reflex
ACA symptoms
anterior cerebral artery
weakness and sensory loss of the distal contralateral leg
urinary incontinence
disturbance of speech- dysarthria (hard to understand)
motor apraxia
severe behavior disturbances/changes in personality
profound apathy
perseveration
PCA
posterior cerebral artery
5 Ds
dizziness, diplopia, dysarthria, dysphagia, dyspraxia
