newton laws Flashcards
(21 cards)
state newton’s first law
an object’s motion will not change unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
what is the name for objects’ tendency to continue in their state of motion?
inertia
if the resultant force is 0N, the forces are. . .
balanced
if the resultant force is 0N, the object is in. . .
equilibrium
what will happen to a stationary object if the resultant force is 0N?
it will remain stationary
what will happen to an object in motion if the resultant force is 0N?
it will continue moving at the same velocity
what will happen to a stationary object if the resultant force is not 0N?
it will accelerate in the direction of the resultant force
what will happen to an object in motion if the resultant force is not 0N?
it will accelerate in the direction of the resultant force
the resultant force is greater than 0N, what do we call the pair of forces?
unbalanced
if a car starts to slow down, what will the resultant force be like?
it will have a resultant force greater than 0N in the backwards direction
why might a bigger truck need a greater engine force to accelerate
as much as a smaller truck?
it has greater mass so it needs a greater force to accelerate as much as the smaller truck
wow can you tell that an object is in equilibrium?
when all forces acting upon an object are equal/balanced
state newton’s third law
every action has an equal and opposite reaction
what is the pair of forces acting in this scenario? (a car driving on the road)
the tyres exert a force on the road and the road exerts an equal and opposite force on the tyres
what is the pair of forces acting in this scenario? (a girl pushing off on her skateboard)
the foot exerts a force on the ground and the ground exerts an equal and opposite force on the foot
what is the pair of forces acting in this scenario? (someone swimming in the water)
the swimmer exerts a force on the water and the water exerts an equal and opposite force on the swimmer
state the definition of a reactant force
a force acting in the opposite direction
if forces are equal and opposite the resultant force will be. . .
0N
why can you float on water?
you float because you exert a force on the water and the water exerts an equal and opposite force on you
if a large person and a small person bump into each other what can be said about the forces they exert on each other?
they will exert the same size force on each other
the reaction force to the force exerted by a gun on a bullet is. . .
the force exerted by the bullet on the gun
