- They have a social-based or community-based objective (supporting a cause/providing public benefit)
- They do not generate profit for owners or shareholders. Any surplus (excess revenue over costs) is reinvested back into the organization.

- Aim to support a social, humanitarian, or environmental cause, often on a national or international level.

A
- A specific form of NGO
- They aim to provide relief to those in need (e.g. the poor, sick, or disadvantaged)
- Rely heavily on donations, volunteers, and fundraising and often do not have to pay tax
