nitrogen cycle Flashcards
(10 cards)
what are the 3 bacterias in the nitrogen cycle
- decomposing bacteria
- nitrifying bacteria
- denitrifying bacteria
what are the 5 stages of the nitrogen cycle
-nitrogen fixation
- nitrification
- assimilation
- ammonification
- denitrification
nitrogen fixation
nitrogen gas from the atmosphere is converted into ammonia or ammonium by bacteria in soil and root nodules. This happens because plants can’t directly use nitrogen gas
purpose of nitrogen fixation
to convert nitrogen gas into ammonium which plants can absorb
nitrification
ammonium is converted into nitrites and then into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria in the soil
purpose of nitrification
produce a form of nitrogen which plants can absorb
assimilation
plants absorb nitrates and then use them to build proteins. Animals then eat the plants to get nitrogen, and thats how nitrogen enters the food chain
ammonification
decomposers break down dead organisms & waste, turning proteins into ammonium, which is returned to the soil
denitrification purpose
completes nitrogen cycle and prevents build up of nitrates in soil
denitrification
nitrates and other nitrogen compounds are converted back into nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria.
