Non Experimental Methods Flashcards
(21 cards)
Correlation
Used to test the strength and direction of any relationship between or two or more co variables
Questionnaire
Used to ask a series of written questions to obtain information about thoughts and behaviour.
Interview
Used to ask a series of verbal questions to obtain information about thoughts and behaviour
Observation
Used to scrutinise ongoing behaviour as it occurs in a natural setting.
Case Study
A multi-method approach used to collect in depth data on one person or a small group.
Strengths of correlation
Provides data on both of the strength and direction of a relationship
Strengths of questionnaire
Can quickly obtain vast amounts of data from many participants
Strengths of interview
Provides qualitative data from both answers and their body language
Strengths of observation
Provides a high level of ecological validity due to its a natural setting.
Strengths of case study
Provides lots of data as multiple methods are used
Design issues of correlation
Design issues of questionnaire
Design issues of interview
Design issues of observation
Design issues of case study
Weaknesses of a correlation
Cannot establish cause and effect as we cannot state the cause of behaviour
Weaknesses of a questionnaire
Social Desirability bias where participants want to appear to be better than they are.
Weaknesses of a interview
Interviewer Bias can easily occur as the qualitative data is open to subject interpretations
Weaknesses of observation
Observer bias can easily occur as the observations made are open to subjective interpretations
Weaknesses of a case study
Lacks population validity as only one participant/small group.
