Nonverbal Test #3 Flashcards
(42 cards)
What is Proxemics?
The way we communicate with space
Territory
The territory of humans is semi fixed or fixed space whose perceived owners can move in and out of it without giving up their claim to it.
Primary Territory
Territory that belongs to a owner is primary territory. Such as personal office, Dads chair. If the territory is used by its owner virtually every day, then it would fall in this category.
Secondary Territory
Secondary territory is generally associated with a particular person or group frequently seen in and around it. For example, In how i met your mother, the group always sits in the same table even though they’re not the owner.
Public Territory
Public territory is open to everyone and is seldom under the constant control of any one person or group. Such as parking spaces, when you see a spot open and then its taken when you get close.
Home Territory
When a group of people “colonize” a public territory by taking it over and using it continuously, it becomes home territory.
Interactional Territory
Special places, called interactional territories, can develop wherever people congregate for social exchange. So picture two people standing in the middle of the hallway having a conversation, these individuals established interactional territory.
Body Territory also known as personal space
Body territory is portable; we carry it with us everywhere we go. Think of a protective bubble if you will.
Territorial Defense
The first is preventive measures and the second method is reaction.
Markers
Markers are usually personal artifacts like backpacks, purses, umbrellas, overcoats, books, and hats used to mark ownership of space. So we lay the backpack on the table to let people know that this is your table.
Labels
Labels include sign saying Keep Out, Go Away, Attack Dogs on Premises, or even names placed on office doors pens, computers, and so on.
Offensive Displays
Offensive display include individuals’ use prevention as a form of territorial defense is through a combination of assertive postures, stances, stares, and gestures. Offensive display simply calls for the owner to look aggressive and formidable to potential encroachers
Violation
Violation is the unwarranted use of someone’s territory. So the encroacher uses someone’s sacred spot without permission.
Invasion
Invasion is a drastic and permanent encroachment in which the invader actually crosses the territorial boundaries of another with the intention of taking over and keeping the territory.
Contamination
Contamination is rendering the territory of another person impure with respect to its definition and usage. It is not so much encroaching with your physical presence as it is leading something of yours in the territory.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal means that we compensate by moving away from the encroacher and letting her or him take over. In short, we flee without a fight, which is a normal reaction to something frightening. What we may fear is what will happen if we make a fuss.
Insulation
Insulation is a second type of reaction of owners whose territory is invaded. Basically its a sophisticated fighting, in which markers are used to protect or stop people from entering or invading the territory.
Turf Defense
Turf Defense is the third type of reaction to a territorial invasion and is closest to the classic fight response. So fighting back, repelling, and standing one’s ground are most common in turf defense. Turf Defense calls for the owner to expel the invader from her or his territory.
Interpersonal Distance
It is suggested that the type of interpersonal relationship in which we are involved affects the distance we place between ourselves and others.
Intimate Zone
The intimate zone of our personal space bubble represents the innermost interaction region. It ranges from touching to a distance of 18 inches. This zone is usually reserved for the few special people in our lives.
Casual-Personal Zone
The casual-personal zone ranges from 18 inches to about four feet.
Density
Density refers to the number of people in space. High density, therefore is a large number of people in a given area.
Crowding
Crowding is a persons perception of spatial restrictions.
Haptics
This is the study of the type, amount, uses of, and results of tactile behavior.
