What are norms?
Shared expectations, rules, or standards of behaviour that are considered acceptable w/in a particular group, culture, or society.
Norms in a nutshell
-can be explicit or implicit
-shaped by… culture, religion, age, peer groups, family, media
-influence beliefs, attiudes, values, & behaviours
-can change over time, especially when challenges by social movements or new policies.
Types of social norms
Social, cultural, majority.
Social norms
Shared rules or expectations w/in a group or sorority that guides how people are supposed to behave in everyday situation.
- reflects what is considered normal, acceptable, appropriate in a particular social group.
E.g.) washing hands after using toilet.
Cultural norms
Shared belief, value, or rule of behaviour that is acceptable & expected w/in a specific culture/ ethnic group.
-guide how ppl act, communicate, dress, eat, celebrate, & relate to others based on their cultural background.
E.g.) not making direct eye contact w elders.
Majority norms
A behaviour, belief, or value that is accepted & followed by most ppl w/in a particular society, group, or population.
-often seen as mainstream & are shaped by what the majority of people do.
E.g.) drinking alcohol in social settings.
Conflict
When 2 groups of people hold significantly different views about norms & the resulting behaviour.
-between specific group norms & majority norms, can lead to misunderstanding, exclusion, discrimination, or social change.
