What is ingestion?
Process of taking in food
What is Digestion?
Breakdown of food into macromolecules and building blocks
What is Assimilation
nutrients move into the cell and are used by the cell
What is absorption?
Molecules move from the lumen of the gut through the intestine wall into the blood vessels or lymph in the villi
What is Egestion?
Elimination of nutrients that have been absorbed from the gut
Where is the Oesophagus?
Lies behind the trachea
What does the Oesophagus do?
Allows food to move from the mouth to the stomach
What is the stomach lined with?
Rugae and mucus
What are the two Sphincters at each end of the stomach called?
The Cardiac Sphincter between the stomach and the Oesophagus, and the Pyloric Sphincter between the stomach and the small intestine

What does the small intestine consist of?
The duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
What joins to from the Hepato-pancreatic duct, (which enters the upper part of the duodenum
The common bile duct and the pancreatic duct
What does the large intestine consist of?
Ascending colon

Chewing

Grinding of bolus by teeth
What is Bolus?
The state in digestion in which the food has been chewed and mixed with saliva
