The Cell Flashcards
(18 cards)
Prokaryotic cells
Do not contain a nucleus and exist as single cells
Eukaryotic cells
Contain a nucleus and are found in multi-cellular and some single cellular organisms
What is a lipid bilayer?
2 layers with the water-loving part facing in towards the membrane and the water-hating part facing out
Is the cell membrane permeable?
Its semi-permeable. Allows certain substances to pass through the membrane
What are carbohydrate chains used for?
The identification of the cell
What is cytoplasm?
A clear, jelly-like substance found in the cell. It holds the organelles in place
What is cytoplasm made of?
About 70% water and many dissolved ions and proteins
What does the nucleus hold?
The DNA / chromatin network
What is the cytoplasm found in the nucleus called?
nucleoplasm
What is the nucleolus?
A store of materials needed to copy DNA
What is the fluid inside the inner membrane of the mitochondria called?
The Matrix
What are vacuoles?
fluid-filled storage areas found in the cytoplasm
What are vacuoles surrounded by?
A membrane called the tonoplast
What does the ER do?
Produce Protein
What does the Golgi body do?
Shape the proteins
What do vesicles do?
Transport nutrients around the cell
What is stem cell?
An unidentified cell which doesn’t have a specialized function yet and is capable of turning into another type of cell for healing purposes.
Whats a 3-5 day old embryo called and how many cells does it have?
Its called a blastocyst and has about 150 cells.
