Q

Fats - chemical structure

A

Triglycerides, which are esters formed from glycerol and 3 fatty acids.

25
Carbohydrates - chemical structure
Large macromolecules composed of carbon, hydrogen & oxygen.
26
Proteins - chemical structure
Complex macromolecules composed of amino acids linked by peptide bonds.
27
What is cholesterol & what is its role in the body?
- Is a fat-like, waxy substance that helps your body make cell membranes, many hormones, and vitamin D. - Comes from food you eat & your liver.
28
What are the 3 types of cholesterol?
- HDL (high-density lipoprotein) - LDL bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) - Triglycerides
29
What is leaky gut?
- When the cell wall isn't functioning properly - Gut is more permeable- things can get out.
30
What are free radicals and antioxidants?
Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cells and are highly reactive. Antioxidants have space electrons to give the free radicals, stabilising it to prevent a chain reaction of damage.
31
Wear and Tear Theory
- The body just wears out due to misuse and neglect. - Body can self-heal to a degree.
32
Hayflick Limit Theory
- Leonard hay flick - suggested that human cell limited to number of times it can divide. - Theorised that number of divisions is approx. 50
33
Cross Linking Theory
- Insulin & glucose damage - Glycosylation theory
34
Free Radical Theory
- Molecule with a free electron - A once balanced molecule becomes unstable - Free radicals attack membranes and create waste in the cells.
