These are the foods we use for cooking and those that should consume in moderation. Some fats are healthy and good for us

Dinner Plate Guidelines

A

1/2 of the plate comes from vegetables/fruits
1/4 of the plate comes from grains
1/4 of the plate comes from meats/poultry/meat alternatives
Small amounts of fats and oils used in cooking or as accompaniments

What is Energy Balance?

A

The amount of food we eat (energy intake) needs to be balanced with how much energy we use (energy output).

How do we get a weight gain?

A

When our energy intake (the food we eat) is greater than our energy out, our body stores extra energy and over time this will lead to weight gain.

How do we get a weight loss?

A

When our energy intake (food eaten) is less than our energy output, our body is using more energy than it is given. Over time this could lead to weight loss, as our body is not getting enough fuel

How is Food Labels important?

A

Labels tell us what is in our food AND how much of it there is. The ingredients listed first on the ingredients list mean that it is the most common ingredient

- Less than 10g fat per 100g - Less than 10g sugar per 100g - more than 5g fibre per 100g

What are ways to Food Marketing?
- Using celebrities to endorse products - Using healthy people and/or connection to sport to make products seem part of a balanced diet - Targeting children/young people with bright colour/toys/competitions - Connecting fast food to movies/pop culture - Provide added value e.g. large servings, meal deals etc. - Tell everyone that their company is doing good things for the community and/or promoting charitable work - It is fun

Support and Shape, Assist in movement, Protection, Production of blood cells, Storage of minerals

What are Support and Shape?
The Skeleton keeps the body upright and provides a framework for muscles and tissues to attach

What is Assist in Movement?
Bones are levers. By attaching muscles to the bones, the body is able to move

What is Protection?
Protects vital organs. eg. ribs and cranium

What is Production of blood cells?
Inside the bone marrow of large long bones

Especially calcium, inside the bones
