What is Macronutrients?
Substances required by the body in large amounts for survival
What are some examples?
Protein, Carbohydrates, Fat
What is Protein used for?
Needed for growth and repair of the body and its tissue
What is Carbohydrates used for?
Needed to provide us with energy and fuel
What is Fats used for?
Needed to protect our body’s and provide us with insulation
What is Micronutrients?
Substances require by the body in smaller amounts for survival
What are some examples of Micronutrients?
Vitamins and Minerals
What are Vitamins and Minerals used for?
Help with metabolism and ensure the body’s organs function effectively
What is the portion size of Meat?
About the size of your palm
What is the portion size for Grains?
About the size of a fist
What is the portion size of Fruits?
About the size of a fist
What is the portion size for Vegetables?
About the size of both palms together
What is the portion size for Oils/Cheeses?
About the size of the tip of thumb
What are the 5 food groups?
Vegetables and Fruits, Grains, Milk and dairy products, Meat and Poultry, Fat/oils and extras
What are Vegetables and Fruits?
All vegetables and fruits whether frozen, dried, fresh, canned or juiced
What are Grains?
Contains bread, pasta, rice, oasts, noodles etc which are high in carbohydrates and provide us with energy
What are Milk and Dairy products?
Includes cow’s milk, yoghurt, cheese, sour cream, ricotta and anything that is made from Dairy
What are Meat and poultry?
The food group that is not consumed. by vegetarians, it consists of red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, seafood
What is Fat, oils and extras?
These are the foods we use for cooking and those that should consume in moderation. Some fats are healthy and good for us
Dinner Plate Guidelines
1/2 of the plate comes from vegetables/fruits
1/4 of the plate comes from grains
1/4 of the plate comes from meats/poultry/meat alternatives
Small amounts of fats and oils used in cooking or as accompaniments
What is Energy Balance?
The amount of food we eat (energy intake) needs to be balanced with how much energy we use (energy output).
How do we get a weight gain?
When our energy intake (the food we eat) is greater than our energy out, our body stores extra energy and over time this will lead to weight gain.
How do we get a weight loss?
When our energy intake (food eaten) is less than our energy output, our body is using more energy than it is given. Over time this could lead to weight loss, as our body is not getting enough fuel
How is Food Labels important?
Labels tell us what is in our food AND how much of it there is. The ingredients listed first on the ingredients list mean that it is the most common ingredient
