What is the purpose of the role of O/C Suspect?
Responsible for supervising the members of the suspects team for the purpose of:
- Obtianing information about the suspects
- Profile and investigate suspects
- Seem evidence to cover offences
- Mitigate defences
- Providing basis for further investigation
Management of suspects falls into three categories, list these.

What is a suspect?
A person of interest who has gained status because of direct or indirect connection to the circumstances of the crime. Motive, Oppourtunity or Means

Where there is no firm line of suspect enquiry, what are Police’ priorities?
Priority should be given to anonymous information at the early stages of investigation.
Information relating to the suspects identity must be acted on immediately.
Before arresting or terminating, OC suspects must consult with the OC investigation to establish strategies. List 4:

What factors need to be taken into consideration prior to interviewing a suspect?
- Liaise with O/C investigation on whether a Level 2 or 3 interviewer should be used.

Scenario: You are the Detective Sergeant in charge of a homicide and plan to terminate an operation in the morning which will involve a search warrant at the address. What arrangements and considerations should be taken. List 4.
When a suspect is arrested for a homicide or other similarly serious crime, what documentation needs to be completed?
- NIA entry
- Message to deputy commissioner
- Cancellation of NIA wanted references
Occasionally when suspects are arrested, they will be examined by a Police Doctor. This can be conducted under S. 88 of the S & S Act- (For evidential material that is reasonably believed to be on the outside of the suspects body.) Outline what evidence may be obtained from this examination.
The doctor must note:
- Injuries
- Take Samples
- Swab for firearm residue
- Provide professional opinion of the suspect and record explanation or comments
When the mental health status of a Suspect is in question, the Polices aim should be to establish…..
Whether the suspect understood the nature and quality of their actions. Whether they understood their actions were morally wrong.
Under what circumstances may Police interview an Alibi Witness?
Approval by the crown solicitor.
When investigating any alibi offered, what steps must OC suspects take? (think of the David Bain case)
- Make enquiries with those other than details provided
- Enquiries to establish where the suspect was at the time, who they were with and what they were doing
- Wherever possible corroboration of an alibi
What is a FACES sketch?
Computerised facial identification system used to compile a likeness of the offender from the description supplied by the witness.
During any interview of a suspect, OC suspect must ensure that:
- The interviews conducted in accordance with investigative interviewing suspect guidelines
- Monitored by supervisor or experienced detective
- Explanation is sought in relation to exhibits
