Describe the first stage of labor.
starts with regular contractions, ends with fully dilated cervix
Describe the second stage of labor.
labor starts with baby entering birth canal, ends with his birth
Describe the third stage of labor.
begins after baby is born, ends with delivery of all afterbirth; lasts 10-20 minutes
When is birth imminent?
when contractions are 2-3 min apart and last 30-60 sec
Define: bloody show.
watery, bloody discharge of mucus; typical in first stage
Define: breech presentation.
buttocks or both feet are delivered first
Define: prolapsed umbilical cord.
occurs when umbilical cord comes out of the uterus with or before the presenting part of the fetus;
cord is pinched
Define: placentia previa.
placenta partially or wholly blocks the neck of the uterus, thus interfering with normal delivery of a baby
Define: abruptio placentae.
premature separation of the placenta from the uterus;
patients with abruptio placentae typically present with bleeding, uterine contractions, and fetal distress
Define: eclampsia.
one or more convulsions occur in a pregnant woman suffering from high blood pressure, often followed by coma and posing a threat to the health of mother and baby
Define: preeclampsia.
woman retains large amounts of fluid and has hypertension
