Q

What four things need to occur in order for a muscle to return to a maximally functioning resting state?

A
  • Oxygen reserves must be replenished
  • Lactic acid must be converted to pyruvic acid
  • Glycogen stores must be replaced
  • ATP and CP reserves must be resynthesized

Q

What is oxygen debt?

A

When vigorous exercise causes dramatic changes in muscle chemistry
(It is the extra amount of O2 needed for the restorative process to occur)

Q

What causes muscle fatigue?

A
  • Muscle fatigue is due to ionic imbalances (Na+-K+ pumps cannot restore ionic balances quickly enough)
  • Due to lactic acid accumulation in the muscle

Q

Why are “rest days” crucial to allow for SR repair?

A

Because prolonged exercise damages the SR and interferes with Ca2+ regulation and release
